
Buffett declared that he intended to give over 80 percent of his fortune to charitable causes. He raised the amount to 99.9% in 2020. The principal beneficiary was the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation--created by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife Melinda. The foundation was focused on issues of world education and health; Bill and Buffett had maintained a close friendship since the early 1990s. The other organizations receiving donations included those that Buffett's three children as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his late wife. It concentrated on women's reproductive rights and funded college scholarship programs. In the year 2010, Buffett and Gates created the Giving Pledge. This pledge also encouraged other wealthy individuals to contribute a significant portion of their fortunes to charitable organizations.
